The Official LGBTQIA+ Flag is a modern evolution of the traditional rainbow flag created in 1978. Designed to represent the full spectrum of LGBTQIA+ identities, it incorporates a strong intersectional dimension by explicitly including transgender and people of color. Featured at Pride parades around the world, the Progress Pride Flag is now a universal symbol of the fight against homophobia, transphobia, and racism.
🌈 A new take on the rainbow flag
The Progress Pride Flag retains the six historic rainbow stripes:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Purple
These colors, chosen by Gilbert Baker in 1978, represent the diversity of sexual orientations and gender expressions. Added to this iconic design is an inclusive chevron on the left side of the flag.
▶️ The inclusive chevron: a symbol of progress
The dynamic chevron, designed in 2018 by Daniel Quasar, features five new colors arranged in an arrow pointing to the right, symbolizing forward movement.
- 🖤🤎 Black and brown – These colors represent people of color and marginalized individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community. They highlight the importance of anti-racism in the fight for equality.
- 🏳️⚧️ Blue, pink, and white – Taken from the trans flag, these colors affirm the central role of trans and non-binary people in the LGBTQIA+ movement. They serve as a reminder that trans rights are an integral part of the fight for equality.
🟡🟣 Intersex inclusion: a major step forward
In the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag, the intersex symbol is incorporated into the chevron.
It consists of:
- 🟡 A yellow background
- 🟣 A purple circle in the center
🟡 Yellow: Beyond Binary Norms – Yellow was chosen because it is associated with neither blue nor pink. It represents an identity that exists outside the binary framework and affirms the natural diversity of intersex variations.
🟣 The purple circle: bodily autonomy – The purple circle symbolizes bodily autonomy, self-determination, and the right of intersex people to make decisions about their own bodies. It represents the fight against non-consensual medical interventions and for the recognition of intersex rights. This addition reinforces the intersectional nature of the flag and affirms that the LGBTQIA+ movement fully includes intersex experiences.
