Trans Day of Remembrance

Today, November 20, is Trans Day of Remembrance (“TDoR” or Trans Day of Remembrance).

TW: Murder/Suicide

TDoR is celebrated in many countries in memory of trans people murdered for transphobic reasons, but also those driven to suicide because of their transidentity, to draw attention to the violence suffered by trans communities.

To date, 320 trans people have been murdered this year:

  • 94% of these victims were trans women or transfeminine people.
  • 48% of these victims were sex workers.
  • 80% of these victims were racialized people.
  • 45% of European victims were migrants
  • 28% of these assassinations were committed in the street.
  • 26% of these murders were committed in the victims' homes.

These figures only count murders. Remember that the suicide rate is twice as high among trans people as in the general population.

Trans Day of Remembrance provides an opportunity to keep alive the memory of those who are no longer with us. Honoring their memory gives us the strength we need to carry out our battles.

We all commemorate our deaths caused by transphobia. Take care of yourself and your trans adults.
